this is an awesome quote:

"Soldiers do this stuff all the time, everywhere. It's warfare," says a U.S. military official. "But the conflict was over when this was done. These are just bored soldiers."

"it's warfare"....well, that's true. but this is awful, and we're supposed to be past the "spoils of war" stage as far as the rules of war go...i.e. you're not allowed to TAKE "spoils of war", so there's really no reason to go looting..i mean, raping went out the window with the civil war..looting was supposed to be finished with the vietnam war.

but i digress....how much do you want to bet this'll never make it to mainstream news organizations? or, we could bet that fox news might even put a positive spin on this or call us whiny liberals.

i liked the next sentence too:

"We need to train these guys to go from shoot-it-up to securing infrastructure."

well boss we never thought about telling them what to do AFTERWARDS. we didn't want to underestimate their common sense.

i also have an uneasy feeling about American soldiers being trained in the art of "shoot-it-up."

don't you mean "misunderestimate"?

well, to be fair, we can't kill EVERYBODY with our bare hands...that'd be too tiring, and since we're gonna give them an assault rifle ANYWAY, they might as well be trained how to use it a little.

this is what that phrase makes me think:

Drill Sargeant of "Shoot-Em-Up Manuevers"

Although what they did was wrong, I can't really say this is a big surprise, or a huge disappointment. You have to expect an invading army is going to have a certain impact on the invaded country, and if it's limited to a little property damage, you're lucky.

I don't think it's possible to take a bunch of 18-25 year olds, usually from a lower economic rung and without much higher education, turn them into a lethal and effective fighting force, and expect to avoid incidents like these. At least we seem to have avoided widespread killing and raping, which is the most important thing. Hell, most people do shit like this when they're younger anyway. It's not on this scale, but most guys I know caused at least some significant property damage at some point during their teens.

The amount of training that goes into making soldiers and marines is astounding...this isn't too much about people losing control and vandalizing as it is about faulting the officers for letting this happen...you're trained to take what you can from the countryside, but come on...the war is OVER. They should be either bivouac'd properly, or brought home.

I don't blame the enlisted too badly, as far as shooting the planes and stealing candy and liquor...that's more pillaging and target practice, etc. The fact that they were stealing watches and shit, though...that's uncalled for and should be dealt with.

And the warchiefs should fucking get them some proper accomodations already.

"the enlisted" ... kind of makes me think of "the infected" from 28 days later.
