i've been to buffets with a chart and without. at both, we really only knew one of the people getting married. i much prefered to be told where to sit. choosing ourself made it kind of awkward. everyone's saving seats for their friends - "seat's taken." and then a bunch of straglers got paired together and we were all like "yea, we don't know anyone either." it ended ok but the process of finding a seat just made it uncomfortable for us. so if you are thinking of the people who might be uncomfortable in the first place, arrange the seats. if it's small and everyone knows everyone else, free for all would probably work. i hate going to weddings.

Making the seating chart isn't 100% easy, but I definitely think it's a good thing to have. It relieves guests of a sense of awkwardness in the beginning of the reception. People will get up and dance and mingle later, but when they first walk in they need direction.

Charts are a good idea - it makes things much less akward for people who don't know anyone. It takes a little work, of course.

seating charts remind me of a 5th grade classroom, not a wedding party.
