this is patently awful.

Students at one of the area's largest Christian schools are reading a controversial booklet that critics say whitewashes Southern slavery with its view that slaves lived "a life of plenty, of simple pleasures."

Leaders at Cary Christian School say they are not condoning slavery by using "Southern Slavery, As It Was," a booklet that attempts to provide a biblical justification for slavery and asserts that slaves weren't treated as badly as people think.

Abuses did occur, but that doesn't mean that every slave in history was treated like a piece of shit. They were more or less treated like livestock, you didn't want to injure them because then they aren't of any use to you. There is some validity in that booklet, but I certainly wouldn't use it as a school textbook.

Justifying slavery with the Bible is just as bad as using it to justify homophobia.

Not defending it, not qualifying it, but it wasn't all like Roots. There was no sense in killing them, or injuring them because then they couldn't work for you. It was bad for business. So incidently there were probably a lot of them that lived better as slaves than they did for the next fifty years as sharecroppers.

It's over. It's been over, and I'd like to keep it that way.

Besides, this isn't really my families' particular area of oppression. Nah, we were too busy killing Injuns. Damned dirty, filthy, stinkin' "whoop-whooping" bastards! Come and scalp my cousins, and I'll show ya what fer! (that's a joke, ok Toby?)

The other side of my family didn't show up until 10 years before the Civil War. They were Southern sympathisers, but they weren't slave owners. It says properly on our 1858 tax records, when we were still a part of Virginia, that under the slaves category there was a big honkin "0" there. So that's half of my family I don't have to apologize for. So, I got that going for me ... which is nice.

stop being such a whiny liberal. i mean, okay, some horrific atrocities occurred. but it wasn't all bad. sure, it was a situation of people being owned by other people, but at least they fed them. those slaves just lacked perspective. we saved them from the dark continent and brought them to the land of the free! which made them free by proxy, at least. there's a silver lining around every cloud! geez, haven't these people heard of forgive and forget?
