so, christian...did you feel the earthquake?

hokkaido, where my family was from, got hit with an 8.0. that's the largest i can remember during my lifetime. somebody tell me if there was a bigger one.

Luckily the Tsunami warnings were cancelled and they arent going to get some huge backlash from those... I was in the 6.7 in LA in '94 (not 2 miles from the center) and cant even imagine the force of the 8.0!

Being the north most island of japan, its pretty sparcely populated, that is in comparision to the 152 billion people in japan! =) Low, injury rate for a earthquake this size...

and i think your right...this is the biggest i have heard of as well in my life time..

When I saw the map of the island, I thought the shape of it looked familiar. Does Grandma Yudi still have family there?

i assume SOME...but most moved to tokyo.

you know they have some money if they moved INTO tokyo, and not OUT OF.

According to this poorly worded quote from that CNN article, 8.0 isn't that rare:

On average, there is one magnitude-8, or great, quake a year in the world, The Associated Press reported USGS geophysicist Brian Lassige as saying.
