a bunch of years ago i was telling my good buddy steve how i wrote out a check to cover a bill, and got the numbers right, but wrote it out wrong. they paid the amount in the "numbers" field, so everything was okay....he stated adamently that they aren't supposed to do that, somethign must have been wrong and i had to tell him "look, i don't care what they are or aren't supposed to do..i'm just telling you what they DID".

well, earlier this week i had a 3000 dollar check against my account cashed...which is okay, because it was me sending money to my money market account.

but it was neither in my hand writing, nor did i endorse it.

in this case, i DO care about what they're supposed to do. mother fuckers, covering unendorsed checks....i hate my bank.

they're supposed to pay the amount that is written out. no questions. the amount in the number box is only supposed to be a verification in case you have poor hand-writing (which you do). if there are any mis-matches or questions, they're supposed to reject it. probably your chicken-scratch looked enough like the amount in the numbers box that they just let it pass :)

same argument he used then, folks!!! regardless, they paid the amount in the numbers field.

but what do you think about my current bank paying on a check that i didnt' even sign?!

it's not an argument, it's a statement of fact :)

it's pretty screwed up, but not the most screwed up thing i've heard. andrew told me once how some old lady accidently sent her mortgage check to the direct tv (or whatever place he worked), the bank honored it, and they applied it against her account. wrong fucking payee...how 'bout that?

Ummm... I'm a little confused here. How exactly did a $3000 dollar check from your checking account to your money market account get made out, if you didn't write it or endorse it? Did you just give one of your checks to someone and tell them to transfer the money?

actually, yes!

i asked them what the biggest check they ever wrote was, and then said "well, go ahead and write me a 3000 dollar one".

and on the subject of cashing other payer's checks...the bank cashed some person's 300 dollar check against HER account instead of this other person's account, and didn't believe my parents when they mentioned the mistake, all because of an earlier 300 deposit! what malarky! it took like a fucking week to get it straigtened out!
