in which i have a long day.
3.5 weeks early - painkillers + unexpected 2006 tax deduction = my kid.

5:10 - get woken up by wife who says "i just leaked a lot of fluid"
5:15 - get told by wife "man, i'm having contractions, i think"
5:16 - call doctor's answering service
5:20 - research leaking fluid, feeling pretty sure it's amniotic fluid. also, less than 10% of births begin with the water breaking before contractions are felt.
5:30 - doc calls. he says get the hell to the hospital.
5:40 - we leave for the hospital. it's 3 weeks early so we didn't have a bag packed...we had to pack and we did a bad job :)
6:10 - get to the hospital triage unit.
6:40 - get litmus test. nurse says "yup, you're having a baby today" when litmus turns blue and cervix is found 80% thinned and at 2cm dilation.
10:30ish - finally get to an LDR -- labor delivery room. get seen by doctor we've never heard of who starts a pitocin drip to hurry along contractions because cervix is only 4cm dilation.
10:45 - contractions start becoming stronger, but not so bad.
12:30 - contractions are bad enough to ask for an epidural.
12:45 - final hydration started for epidural. expected to take 15-20 minutes at which time anesthetist will come in to provide the epidural.
13:00 - hydration finished.
13:25 - emergency all-hands c-section provided for some other patient. anesthetist otherwise busy.
13:30 - wife in a lot of pain. feeling need to bear down. call nurses station and say "my wife needs to push" and them going "we'll send someone right in"
13:31 - nurse comes in to do exam. goes "oh, wow, um. you're fully dilated and at +2. if you need to push, go ahead and push"
13:35 - anesthetist comes into room. we talk about wanting an epidural and the doc basically says we might not even have enough time to do it, all things considered. though, if we do have enough time to do it, we might not have enough time for it to take effect. though, if it takes effect, it'll give us enough time to have our doctor (who we just met that day) perform the delivery.

13:36 - my wife proves she's harder than all of us by telling us that she's going to go natural.

13:40 - some other doctor shows up and introduces herself and tells us she's going to perform the delivery. many tables of equipment and nurses start showing up.
13:42 - our doc shows up. along with another doc just in case. the two docs we didn't know leave, "our" doc gets acquainted.

13:51 - my kid is born.

14:00 - my wife is stitched up with just a little local anesthetic. which didn't really do anything.

so may i present lilia elise engelsen
