You know who one of my favorite storytellers is right now? M. Night Shyamalan. I just finished watching Lady in the Water last night and I gotta say I really loved it.

Signs is the scariest movie I've ever seen. It was very apocalyptic and it had an alien invasion...two of my "buttons" as far as terror goes. Unbreakable was really underrated. I really love Night's fascination with seeing superheroes as regular people...kind of a theme that "Lady in the Water" continues. I've only seen the ending of "The Village". I think I'd probably love the whole movie, but I'm really bored by the idea of 15th-17th century living.

So, yeah, I can't wait for an M. Night Shyamalan movie to come out.

There's just one or two problems: The acting and the dialog.

I LOVE the stories, and I love the cinematography, and I love how some of the actors just do their own thing (Joaquin Phoenix in Signs, Paul Giamatti in LITW) to alleviate the bad direction. But honestly, the characters are so wooden and the dialog is so often ludicrous. He does a lot of telling the story instead of showing the story, and he's heard it so many times that he vents his spleen in LITW. He has a character that spouts off these (accurate) criticisms and is then made responsible for the tension of the third act and is henceforth killed off gruesomely. I mean, come on!

But yeah, wow. What a cool movie.

Dear M. Night Shyamalan,

Thank you for reviving 75¢ night by writing, directing, producing, and playing a main character in one of the worst movies I have ever seen.

Love,
Rachel"

dude, yuck. signs is at the top of my "shittiest movies evar" list. it was not scary. using sudden loud noises and images to induce people to jump is not the same as scary.

i don't think i've seen any of his movies that i've actually liked.
