why diamonds suck.

i really hate diamond solitaire engagement rings. they make me nauseous.

also, this is the first time in my life i've ever typed "nauseous", i think. i couldn't figure out how to spell it.

and, actually (very few people realize this-- i myself was corrected once), the correct form of the word should be "nauseated". one can never be nauseous... only nauseated.

true! but the same people would also prefer you use "nauseating" instead of "nauseous" when you try to use it properly.

"nauseous" is basically on the outs, replaced by nauseating/nauseated.

That's true, and it's really interesting.

The way I understand it is that they're more or less throwing up their hands and saying, "Okay, we tried to stop it but the language has evolved."

Apparently they do that any time the common usage of language is universally inconsistent with what the purists (dictionaries, copyeditors, etc) say.

It raises some questions, don't you think? What's the point of going out of your way to be proper when propriety changes over time to fit what the improper people are doing? If the corruptions of the uneducated officially win out regardless?

Do we just do this to seem smart? Perhaps that means that 'proper' is often really a synonym of 'mindlessly anal'. But if we were to go with the flow completely there'd be chaos. We'd have skreet signs.

Weird.

Actually... One can be nauseous, since it means "causing nausea".

The fact that I felt like I needed to weigh in here, for instance, makes me feel somewhat nauseous.

HAHAH, i had never thought of it like that.

And that was an ambiguous example. I pseudo-cleverly pointed out that I may cause nausea... Not that I'm nauseated.

Right.

Rolls eyes at half of them ...

- Diamonds are worthless - well techinically all prescious gems are just worthless hunks of rocks, and precious metals are just worthless hunks of metals that are too soft for anything other than decoration. Yes, diamonds and gold outside of indsutrial (diamonds) and technological uses (both) are worthless, but have been widely accepted as precious and valuable objects by various societies throughout the course of history.

Yes, they're hard to sell because the diamond dealing and trading business (at least the non-pawn owners) is an elite fraternity, and they're very snobbish. Average retail markup on diamonds is about 300%, which is the reason a pawn shop won't give you a lot of money for one, that and the off chance that it's stolen.

- Diamond miners are disproportionately exposed to HIV/AIDS - welcome to Africa, eh? Sex tourism and migrant workers are a big thing for lots of industries on the continent. Pretty much any manula laborers that have to go where the work is fall victim to the heavily unsanitary sex trade. This isn't exclusively a diamond thing, it's pretty much an Africa thing.

- Open-Pit Diamond Mines Pose Environmental Threats - Hmm, well there's something I've never heard of before. Strip mining is bad for the environment? Since when?

Anyhow, I absolutely agree with you on the engagement ring BS about diamonds, but this is a bit much.

Gee...good thing no one's proposing to me. But I think they're pretty...I would probably accept an antique one. But I agree...an emerald solitaire is much prettier, or maybe ruby.

yeah, diamonds suck...but doesn't your girl's ring have diamond accents on it?

yup...but chosen because of how they go on the ring, not because of any cultural pressure.
