I posted this to anti_righty:

Does everybody here know about the My Lai massacre? If not, read up.

Basically, the heroes of it became pariahs for THIRTY YEARS and the perpetrator, William Calley, well...
On April 1, only a day after Calley was sentenced [to life in prison], President Richard Nixon ordered him released from prison; in August 1971 his term was reduced to 20 years. Ultimately, despite having ordered his troops to commit mass murder of civilians, Calley only served 3 1/2 years of house arrest in his quarters at Fort Benning, Georgia and was then released in 1974 by a federal judge.

Never underestimate the republicans, that's all I'm saying.

Another interesting factoid is that the journalist who broke the story, Seymour Hersh, is the same journalist who broke Abu Graib. And he's the reporter who says there's a lot more coming out of Abu Graib that we're not hearing about. And probably won't.

My Lai I personally believe to be blown out of proportion. It was impossible to discriminate between combatants and non-combatants. I have little doubt that 80 year old men, and healthy women were killing U.S. servicemen. Killing children is extremely harsh, however given the circumstances I can't say for certain that I would have countermanded my orders in the heat of the moment. Bad things happen in war, and sometimes you do what you have to do in order to survive whether it's right or wrong. Even when you're right it could end up costing you your life. Bullets don't seem to care who is good and who is not.

That may seem cruel, but perhaps I just don't have much compassion for an enemy whose idea of a targeted explosive is to strap a satchel charge to a 6 year old kid and tell him to jump on a helicopter. I have no respect for a culture in which life comes so cheap, especially the lives of children.

Our media and war do not mix. The media won the war for the Vietnamese. I can't say as that doesn't ruffle my feathers, and the fact that we now have a stronger media than ever I'm not exactly pleased with the way they cover the war today. Vietnam was a clusterfuck to begin with, but the media fucked it up even more.

we're always the superior force, and we've never been desperate because we've never been fighting for our homes. i'm not sure we're qualified to say what price people in those kinds of conditions actually put on life. considering we used to lynch people because of the color of their skin, and we are still beating the shit out of people because of where they choose to put their dicks, well, i'm not sure we place too great a value on life either.

now, while i'm not in agreement that my lai has been blown out of proportion, you have a point about contramanding orders in the heat of battle. while i'd still have found the sergeants guilty, i certainly wouldn't have found the entire platoon guilty, and you'll find that neither the sergeants nor the junior enlisted were found guilty.

I don't have respect for extreme racists, either. I don't think they should be able to be doubly punished for the ignorance of their crime, but I don't think they should get off scott free either. Same goes with homophobes, their stupidity seems to know no bounds. I may not be the biggest supporter of the minority nation, but I certainly don't go around and beat them within an inch of their life, and neither does any other decent human being.

I certainly wouldn't let anyone make a suicide bomber out of my child. Who or what are you fighting for when you resort to tactics like that? I couldn't see how anyone could resort to such a deplorable tactic. That would have certainly dehumanized them in my head for quite some time. There was no other solution for that war other than to withdraw.
